  • Beschreibung: The film is an important document because it shows E.Thomopoulos ((1878-1976) live painting,while we hear him providing a lot of biographical details. We see him in his atelier, sporting a beret and bow tie, but also in nature, in a suit and bowler hat. The viewer has the opportunity to look at a substantial number of his works, emanating an impressionist disposition. Looking at his works, one has the feeling that the poetry of painting eases the pressure on the people who toil long hours harvesting and ploughing the fields. Strict realism, lyricism and simplicity characterize the painter's work, who even at the age of 96 – he was that old when the film was made – carries on painting.

    2. INTRODUCTION TO THOMOPOULOS' S WORK AND BIOGRAPHY UNTIL HIS YEARS IN ITALY AS A STUDENT We watch the artist paint, while we hear him talk about his life and work from an older interview. The Greek nature and life are Thomopoulos's source of inspiration. Driven by an impressionist disposition, he created his own personal manner. Thomopoulos was born in Patras in 1878. His father was a banker. Thomopoulos successfully completed his studies at Ekpaideftirio, Corfu (1892-95) and went to Paris in 1896. In 1900, his works were on display at the Paris International Exhibition. (THOMOPOULOS'S ATELIER)
    3. THE RETURN TO GREECE AND HIS ARTISTIC PERIOD WITH THEMES FROM THE COUNTRYSIDE After his return to Greece, Thomopoulos paints exclusively country scenes. We can see paintings from this period and himself painting in his own atelier. (THOMOPOULOS'S ATELIER)

THE ICON PAINTING OF THE CHURCH OF THE PRESENTATION OF CHRIST (YPAPANTI) IN KALAMATA Influenced by his studies in Venice, Thomopoulos does the icon painting in the Church of the Presentation of Christ (Ypapanti) in Kalamata with artistic means ahead of his time.     5. PUBLIC ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF HIS WORK, HIS ACADEMIC COURSE AND THE EPILOQUE He was professor at the School of Fine Arts from 1915 to 1945. We can hear him at an interview providing valuable biographical details. In 1927 he was awarded the National Medal of Distinction and was elected to the Academy in 1945.
